And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:10 ESV
My wife and I saw a movie this past weekend centered on the spiritual battle between God and the devil. The movie implied that God was losing the fight and relying on human beings to help Him defeat the devil. It also falsely presented Satan as a powerful demonic being who was free to wreak havoc on earth without consequences or restrictions.
Although the movie was entertaining, it was also theological and biblically inaccurate. God cannot and will not lose against any enemy. He is the supreme divine force who created all things and is omnipotent in His power. The Lord has authority over all spiritual forces, powers, and principalities. The idea that God can lose the celestial battle against the devil is preposterous.
Unfortunately, the devil is falsely pressing this demonic narrative through Hollywood to confuse people. But the word of God confirms that God cannot lose. In fact, Revelation 20:10 reminds us that devil and all the demonic hosts will be thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur to be tormented forever. The devil’s fate is already sealed. He cannot and will not defeat God. The battle has already been fought and the winner is already declared. Thus, the Bible declares we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus.
Disciples of Jesus Christ do not have to live in fear of the devil and his demons. They are defeated foes who are waiting for their eternal sentencing. The devil and his demons are out on bail—so to speak—and waiting for the wrath of God to consume them on the day that has been set aside by God. In the meantime, they are huffing and puffing like big bad wolves scaring human beings on earth. But Christians do not have to be afraid of them for God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power and a sound mind. Therefore, when the enemy comes against us, we can resist him and rebuke him in the name of Jesus.
The devil is mortally wounded, but he is not yet exterminated. He still has the ability to wreak havoc in the world. Therefore, we need to remain hidden in God through Christ Jesus so the enemy will not be able to get to us. The Bible is but God’s instructions to help live in victory and resist the enemy’s misinformation campaign and his attacks against the world.
Let us not be deceived by any movie or propaganda. God has already won the battle and is seated in victory in the heavenly realm. He has authority over all things both on earth and in heaven. The Lord has no rival and no equal. Just because the devil is causing death and destruction in the world does not mean he has the power to defeat God.
Jesus will return with all glory to cleanse the world as He cleansed the temple in Jerusalem (John 2:14-17). When the Lord returns with the heavenly hosts, we will be caught up with him in the air. Then, He will reign on the earth forevermore. Finally, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under our feet (Romans 16:20).” Demonic rulers and authorities will be put to shame by the power of Almighty God through Christ Jesus (Colossians 2:15). Then we will see the Lord in all His glory as the angels in heaven and all creation will worship Him and proclaim His glory.
