For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
God’s love for humanity is so amazing it transcends human understanding. None of us will ever fully comprehend how deep, far, and wide God’s love is for us. We will never understand why a self-sufficient and all-powerful God would invest so much in a fallen creation. It begs the question, are we really worth the eternal investment God has made in us? The answer from God’s perspective is a resounding yes.
Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s masterpiece, created in and through Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared for us before the creation of the world. We were created in the image of God, and the Lord poured His Spirit into us after He formed us out of dust. Because we have God’s Spirit within, we are worth far more than anything on earth and in the heavens to our creator.
But that is not the only reason God has invested so much in our eternal salvation through Christ Jesus. The ultimate reason is love. In today’s text, John tries to capture the extravagance of God’s love for humanity. His love reaches the highest mountain and flows to the lowest valley. Therefore, Paul categorically asserts in Romans 8:35-39, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
From God’s divine perspective, we are worth all the sacrifices that Jesus made for us. Therefore, you are worth whatever God has promised you and already given to you. It is easy for us to feel unworthy of God’s bountiful blessings. At times, other people may make us feel unloved and underserving of the blessings of God. Indeed, many people struggle with low self-esteem and do not feel they are worth much because of the experiences they’ve had. But I want to remind you today that you are worth it. Yes, you are worth the new house, car, or job the Almighty has blessed you with or are praying for because the Lord declares that if we Take delight in Him, He will give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4).
When people reject you, despise you, abuse you, or persecute you remember that God loves you and you are worth His defense of you. When sickness invades your body, remember you are worth God’s divine healing. Therefore, you should pray and trust God for healing. When Satan tries to attack you, remember that God has ordered His angels to encamp all around you and will not let your foot be moved because you are worth it.
In the gospel song entitled “I don’t know why Jesus loves me” by Andrae Crouch, we read the following lyrics:
I don't know why Jesus loved me I don't know why He cared I don't know why He sacrificed His life Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did He left His mighty throne in glory To bring to us redemption's story Then He died but He rose again Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did
I can categorically say that I do know why: because we are worth it to Him. We are His chosen people, His royal priesthood, His holy nation, God’s special possession, that we may declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9). That’s why! So yes, we are worth it!
